Environment and Polar Security Committee

US Navy fast attack submarine during ICEX 2022 (Arctic Ocean)

Mission

The Environment and Polar Security Committee seeks to educate the public and provide non-partisan recommendations on U.S. strategic interests in the Arctic and Antarctic by promoting stability, responsible resource management, environmental protection, and resilient governance frameworks. The committee works in alignment with ACNSL’s lines of effort to understand geopolitical tensions and support a rules-based order that balances national security and environmental stewardship.

Strategic Challenges

  • Managing rising geopolitical tensions with Russia and China expanding their influence and friction within the Arctic Council.

  • Upholding international law and countering false territorial claims in the polar regions.

  • Balancing economic interests with environmental protection as nations race to exploit strategic reserves.

  • Addressing the increasing use of shipping routes, while upholding freedom of navigation principles and mitigating environmental risks.

  • Enhancing search and rescue, climate resilience, and emergency preparedness as civilian and commercial activity increases in polar environments.

  • Enhancing domain early warning capability and maintaining strategic nuclear deterrence in the polar regions.

  • Strengthening polar security through NATO engagement.

  • Clarifying and refining the U.S. military’s polar command structure to ensure coordinated defense, disaster response, and maritime domain awareness.
