Sanford Holman, Major General USA (Retired)

Sanford E. Holman is a retired major general of the United States Army. Holman served over 37 years in the Army, inclusive of Army and Army Reserve, Combined and Joint service. He commanded at the company, battalion, brigade and division level. He concluded his career as the Senior Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs after serving as the Commanding General of the United States Army Reserve’s 200th Military Police Command from 2011 to 2014. He retired from the active Army in 2015. 

A native of Gary, Indiana, Holman graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering in 1978. Holman entered the United States Army in 1978, after receiving his commission as a second lieutenant of Infantry. He began his service at Fort Benning, Georgia in the 197th Infantry Brigade (Separate) as a Mechanized Infantry Rifle Platoon Leader and a Battalion S-3 Air. While there he also served as a Branch Chief and antiarmor weapon systems instructor at the United States Army Infantry School. 

He then served in Occupied West Berlin as a Battalion S-1 and an Infantry Company Commander in the Berlin Brigade and the Deputy G-3 on the Allied Staff - Berlin. He next served as an Operations Research/Systems Analysis officer in the Training and Doctrine Command Analysis Center at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico studying future antiarmor weapon systems and supporting OPERATION DESERT SHIELD/STORM. 

He concluded his initial active-duty triple-hatted as Airfield Commander of H-805, the S-2/3 of the 20th Area Support Group and Director of Plans Training Mobilization and Security for Military Area IV in the Republic of Korea. He transitioned to the Army Reserve in June 1992. 

His previous assignments also include the Army Reserve 98th Division (Institutional Training) where he served as G-4 and Assistant Division Commander for Operations. While there he deployed as the Senior Military Advisor/Team Leader for the 3rd Iraqi Army Division for OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and Deputy Commander for the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (HOA) for OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. Following his deployment to HOA, He remained on active duty for additional combined/joint experience serving as Vice J7 of the United States Joint Forces Command, Vice Commander of the Joint Warfighting Center and Deputy Commander for Combined/Joint Operations for the United States Second Fleet where he assisted in its certification as a Combined/Joint Task Force headquarters. 

He also served as a member of the Defense Language Steering Committee for the Office of the Secretary of the Defense, the Military Education Coordination Council for the Office of the Director of the Joint Staff and the Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee (ARFPC) for the Office of the Secretary of the Army.

While serving as the Commanding General of the 200th Military Police Command, he also served as the Deputy Commander of Rear Area Command for the United Nations Command and Republic of Korea/United States Combined Forces Command in the Republic of Korea and Deputy Commander for Detention Operations and Provost Marshal for the United States Army Pacific. 

Holman's civilian and military education includes: a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1990 and a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College in 2000. He graduated from the Infantry Officer Basic Course; the Armor, Military Police and Quartermaster Officer Advanced Courses; the Combined Arms and Services Staff School and the Army Command and General Staff Officer Course from the Command and General Staff College and the Operation Research/ Systems Analysis Military Applications Course at the Army Logistics Management College. He also graduated from the Combined/Joint Force Land Component Commander Course at the Army War College. He has served as a computer science adjunct faculty member for Central Texas College (Overseas).
