Major General John B. Hashem, USA (Ret.), serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Reserve Organization of America (ROA). He leads the national staff in executing ROA’s mission as the premier military service organization for the uniformed reserve components, their members, families, and veterans. Representing nearly one million serving reservists and more than 35,000 members who currently serve or previously served, he directs strategy, oversees operations, and manages the organization’s resources. He drives ROA’s four strategic imperatives: champion the reserve, empower the member, strengthen the brand, and secure the future. He assumed this role in September 2025.

Hashem retired in 2024 after 40 years of service. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1984 and served from Private to Major General, with a myriad of experiences in the active Army and the Army Reserve. He served in a wide range of strategic and operational assignments as an Army Strategist (FA59). Notable positions include Military Executive and Board Member of the Secretary of Defense’s Reserve Forces Policy Board; Deputy J5 for Plans and Programs at U.S. Africa Command; Deputy Commanding General–Support and Director, Army Reserve Engagement Cell at U.S. Army North (Fifth Army); Director of Strategy and Integration for the Army Reserve; Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Americas’ Security Affairs; Commander, Psychological Operations Task Force–Iraq; Strategist at U.S. Northern Command; and Deputy J5 for Joint Task Force–National Capital Region.

MG (Ret) Hashem is qualified and served in Infantry, Psychological Operations, Civil Affairs and in Strategy. Awards include the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Office of the Secretary of Defense Staff Badge, and the Army Staff Badge. Hashem holds a BS in Electronic Engineering and Business from the University of Scranton; an MS in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College; an MS in International Relations from Troy University; and a Graduate Cert in Homeland Security from the University of Colorado. He is married to Deborah. They have three children: Dana, Ian, and Leila.
